herniated-disc-bulging-disc

Herniated or Bulging Disc

Often, the source of your pain is the rupture, herniation or bulge of one of your cervical discs, the elastic pads that provide cushioning between the vertebrae in your neck. A disc may become herniated as a result of normal wear and tear, or because of a traumatic injury. The symptoms of a herniated cervical disc can include pain when trying to turn or bend your head or neck, including discomfort that radiates down your arm. You may also feel numbness, pins and needles, burning, electric shock or tingling sensations. When this happens it is referred to as “cervical radiculopathy”. There may also be a constant stabbing or throbbing pain in your neck making it difficult to concentrate, sleep or find a comfortable position. READ MORE

Pinched or Irritated Nerves in Your Neck

This type of pain is caused by the irritation or compression of a nerve root in your neck or spine. It may be the result of a herniated disc, a bulging disc, degenerative disc disease or a condition known as “spinal stenosis,” where bony spurs, joint inflammation or disc material impinges and presses on nerve roots. cervical-face-joint-syndrome

Cervical (Neck) Facet Joint Syndrome

Your body has what are called “facet joints” wherever one vertebra connects to another one. These joints may become damaged or swollen, either from injury or overuse, wearing away the protective cartilage and causing pain. If you have problems turning or bending your head with or without pain, you may be suffering from cervical facet joint syndrome.  READ MORE

myofacial-pain

Myofacial Pain

Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is a chronic pain condition that affects the muscles and surrounding connective tissues, known as fascia. This condition is characterized by the presence of trigger points—sensitive, taut knots within the muscle that can cause localized pain and refer pain to other parts of the body. Trigger points often form as a result of muscle overuse, injury, or stress, and they can lead to restricted movement, muscle weakness, and significant discomfort. Read more

epidural-steroid-cortisone-injections

Epidural Steroid (Cortisone) Injections

If you have pain associated with herniated or bulging discs, spinal stenosis or cervical radiculopathy, we can administer an injection to reduce inflammation. READ MORE
Percutaneous-disectomy

Percutaneous Discectomy

We can also perform a procedure known as
a percutaneous discectomy, where we remove the portion of a damaged disc that is impinging on or irritating an adjacent nerve, in many cases bringing about almost instantaneous relief. READ MORE
Medial-branch-nerve-block

Medial Branch Blocks (Nerve Blocks)

For patients suffering from spondylopathy, facet joint syndrome or arthritis of the spine, we typically perform a medial branch block, where we inject an anesthetic near the small nerves in the facet joints of your spine to temporarily numb the area, allowing us to diagnose and treat the source of your pain. Radiofrequency-alation

Radio Frequency Ablation

This technique, also used to treat facet joint
syndrome, involves the use of radio waves to numb nerves or abnormal tissue that may be the source of your pain. READ MORE

Ultrasound Guided Trigger Point Injections

We can also perform a procedure known as
a percutaneous discectomy, where we remove the portion of a damaged disc that is impinging on or irritating an adjacent nerve, in many cases bringing about almost instantaneous relief. READ MORE
Spinal-cord-stimulation

Spinal Cord Stimulation

(Trial and Permanent Placement)
With this procedure, a device is surgically implanted in your spine, emitting mild
electrical impulses that help relieve pain by impeding the pain signals sent from your spine to your brain. It’s commonly used to treat neck
pain following failed surgical procedures.

What Are The Common Causes of Neck Pain?

As a general rule, neck pain tends either to be focused entirely in your neck (known as axial pain) or will radiate from your neck to other parts of your body, typically your arms or shoulders (referred to as radicular pain). Because your neck plays such a central role in virtually all movement and posture, it can be susceptible to injury in a number of ways:

Normal Wear and Tear

As you age, the cartilage in your neck naturally deteriorates, leading to osteoarthritis. Additionally, aging can lead to spinal stenosis, where your spinal canal narrows, causing impingement of nerves.

Overexertion or Physical Strain

Certain types of activities (such as too much time on a computer screen) can lead to inflammation, loss of range of motion, and chronic pain.

Poor Posture

Slouching forward or backward can put undue strain on your neck. Additionally, improperly cushioning your head while sleeping can be a common source of neck pain.

Traumatic Injury

Motor vehicle accidents, work injuries, slips and falls, and sports injuries are frequently the cause of acute or chronic neck pain.

Mental Stress or Anxiety

It’s a common response to tighten your neck and shoulders when you’re feeling stress. Constant tension can often be the cause of chronic pain.

Neck Pain (Cervical) Conditions

Types of neck pain

What is cervical radiculopathy?

This condition is an irritation or compression of one or more nerve roots in the cervical spine. Because these nerves travel to the shoulders, arms and hands, an injury in the cervical spine can cause symptoms in these areas. Cervical radiculopathy may result from a variety of problems with the bones and tissues of the cervical spinal column.

Neck joint pain

What is cervical facet joint syndrome?

This is a problem with the facet joints of the cervical spine. They are the joints found where one vertebra connects to another. Facet joints support your spine, while allowing it to bend and twist. With this syndrome, these joints become stiff and painful in the upper part of your spine.

Neck pain from bulging disc

What is a herniated disc (cervical) ?

This condition is a rupture of one of the vertebral discs in your neck. A herniated disc can allow disc material to press harmfully against the spinal nerves.

Neck Pain Care & Pain Management (Treatments)

Pain Management / Treatment

What is cervical facet radio frequency neurotomy?

This procedure uses heat from radio waves to treat painful facet joints in your neck. It eases pain that isn’t helped by medications or physical therapy.

Epidural steroid injection

What is epidural steroid injection (ESI) in the cervical spine?

This injection treats the pain of an inflamed nerve in your cervical spine. It relieves nerve swelling. If you have a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or some other problem that’s pressing on a nerve, it may help you.

Nerve block

What is medial branch block (cervical)?

This is an injection of numbing medicine that bathes the medial branch nerves. These nerves are attached to the facet joints of the spine. Disease or injury of these joints can cause pain in the medial branch nerves. This pain may travel through the neck, shoulders, upper back and head. A medial branch block can help your physician find the source of your pain. It may also provide temporary pain relief.

Trigger Point injections

What are trigger point injections?

This outpatient procedure is designed to reduce or relieve the pain of trigger points. These small, tender knots can form in muscles or in the fascia (the soft, stretchy connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs). The trigger point injection procedure takes only a few minutes to complete.

Spinal Cord Stimulator

What is a spinal cord stimulator implant?

Spinal cord stimulation (also called SCS) uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the back, arms and legs. It is believed that electrical pulses prevent pain signals from being received by the brain. SCS candidates include people who suffer from neuropathic pain and for whom conservative treatments have failed.
