What Is Sciatica?

Your sciatic nerve is located in your lower back and travels down the back of each leg. When the nerve is compressed or irritated, it will typically cause pain in your lower back and legs.

Sciatica

What is lumbar radiculopathy (sciatica) ?

This condition is an irritation or compression of one or more nerve roots in the lumbar spine. Because these nerves travel to the hips, buttocks, legs and feet, an injury in the lumbar spine can cause symptoms in these areas. Sciatica may result from a variety of problems with the bones and tissues of the lumbar spinal column.

What Are the Most Frequent Causes of Sciatica and Related Pain?

Sciatica is commonly the result of the compression or pinching of the sciatic nerve. This may be caused by:

Traumatic Injury

Traumatic injury, such as a car, truck or motorcycle accident, a workplace mishap, or a slip and fall.

Posture or Weight

Poor posture or excess weight can impinge on a nerve and cause sciatica.

Repetitive Stress or Motion

Repetitive movements or prolonged strain—such as bending, lifting, or twisting—can place pressure on spinal nerves, potentially triggering sciatica and other related pain conditions.

Wear and Tear

Wear and tear from repetitive exercise or frequent impact during sports can contribute to sciatica.

Overexertion

Overexertion from activities like lifting, bending, running, walking, standing, or squatting can place pressure on spinal nerves.

Other painful conditions

Spinal stenosis, bone spurs, tumors or herniated discs can lead to sciatica.

How Do We Treat Sciatica?

When you visit us for relief from pain—whether it’s sciatica or another condition—we begin with a thorough medical examination and a detailed review of your medical history to ensure an accurate diagnosis. Depending on your specific needs, we may prescribe pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications for short-term relief. We also commonly recommend physical therapy and to improve mobility and reduce symptoms. Based on your individual condition and diagnosis, we may recommend a procedure to help reduce inflammation, relieve nerve pressure, and restore function.

If you need further treatment to effectively manage your pain, we offer:

(View the  following short videos and descriptions.)

Steroid injections

The injection of anti-inflammatory medication around your spinal nerves

What are lumbar epidural steroid injections?

This injection procedure is performed to relieve low back and radiating leg pain. Steroid medication can reduce the swelling and inflammation caused by spinal conditions.

Percutaneous Disc Decompression (Stryker® Disc Dekompressor® Discectomy)

What is Percutaneous Disc Decompression (Stryker® Disc Dekompressor® Discectomy)?

This is a procedure to treat a herniated disc. That’s a bulging disc in your spine. Getting rid of the bulge can relieve pressure on your nerves. It can relieve pain in your lower back and your legs.

Microdiscectomy Lumbar spine

What is microdiscectomy in the lumbar spine)?

This surgery, done through a tiny opening in your skin, treats a bulging or herniated disc in your lower back. It relieves pressure on nearby nerves. This can help with pain and other symptoms you may be experiencing in your back, buttock, leg and foot.

Spinal Cord Stimulation (trial procedure)

The use of electrical impulses to block pain signals to your brain

What is spinal cord stimulation (trial procedure)?

Spinal cord stimulation (also called SCS) uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the back, arms and legs. It is believed that electrical pulses prevent pain signals from being received by the brain. SCS candidates include people who suffer from neuropathic pain and for whom conservative treatments have failed.
