Herniated-disc

What Are the Common Causes of a Herniated Disc?

More often than not, disc herniation stems from degeneration. As we age, our discs become less hydrated and weaker, making them more susceptible to bulging, rupturing or herniating. Certain activities can accelerate the degenerative process, such as sitting for long periods in the same position, carrying too much weight on your body, playing certain sports, engaging in work that requires a lot of bending, twisting or lifting, and even smoking.

Herniated Disc

What is a herniated disc ?

Between the vertebrae of your spine are soft discs. They let your spine twist and bend. They absorb shocks. But if damaged, the disc’s soft center can push through the disc wall. That’s a herniated disc. This bulge presses against nerves in your spine.

How Can We Help You Manage the Pain?

We offer a wide range of treatment options for the pain caused by a herniated disc. Initially, we’ll conduct a thorough medical exam and carefully review your medical history. We may also use an MRI or an EMG (electromyogram) to determine the extent of nerve, muscle and soft tissue injury.

We can prescribe anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxers and painkillers to alleviate your pain in the short term, as your body tries to heal itself. We’ll also typically recommend modification or suspension of certain types of physical activity while your body heals. We commonly prescribe physical therapy and rehabilitation, to help strengthen the muscles around the disc.

If these treatment options don’t effectively deal with your pain, we will typically recommend interventional pain management procedures, such as:

The following short videos and descriptions explain herniated disc treatments that we use:

Facet Joint injections

What are facet joints and facet joint injections?

This outpatient procedure is designed to reduce or relieve the pain of trigger points. These small, tender knots can form in muscles or in the fascia (the soft, stretchy connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs). The trigger point injection procedure takes only a few minutes to complete.

Facet Joint injections

What are epidural steroid injections?

This injection treats the pain of an inflamed nerve in your cervical spine. It relieves nerve swelling. If you have a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or some other problem that’s pressing on a nerve, it may help you.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections

What are platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections?

This injection treats the pain of an inflamed nerve in your cervical spine. It relieves nerve swelling. If you have a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or some other problem that’s pressing on a nerve, it may help you.

Spinal cord stimulation

What is spinal cord stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation (also called SCS) uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the back, arms and legs. It is believed that electrical pulses prevent pain signals from being received by the brain. SCS candidates include people who suffer from neuropathic pain and for whom conservative treatments have failed.

Radiofrequency ablations

What is radiofrequency ablation?

This procedure uses heat from radio waves to treat painful facet joints in your lower back. It eases pain that isn’t helped by medications or physical therapy.

Medial branch blocks

What are medial branch blocks?

This procedure uses heat from radio waves to treat painful facet joints in your lower back. It eases pain that isn’t helped by medications or physical therapy.

If you are still experiencing pain caused by a herniated disc, we may recommend a more complex pain management procedure, such as a percutaneous discectomy.

Percutaneous disectomy or percutaneous disc nuceloplasty

What is a percutaneous disectomy or percutaneous disc nuceloplasty?

This minimally-invasive procedure uses a small needle and advanced radiofrequency technology to reduce a herniated disc, quickly relieving pain in most patients. The procedure may be performed on an outpatient basis using a gentle, relaxing medicine and local anesthetic.
