What Is Sciatica?

Your sciatic nerve is located in your lower back and travels down the back of each leg. When the nerve is compressed or irritated, it will typically cause pain in your lower back and legs.

Sciatica

What is lumbar radiculopathy (sciatica) ?

This condition is an irritation or compression of one or more nerve roots in the lumbar spine. Because these nerves travel to the hips, buttocks, legs and feet, an injury in the lumbar spine can cause symptoms in these areas. Sciatica may result from a variety of problems with the bones and tissues of the lumbar spinal column.

What Are the Most Frequent Causes of Sciatica and Related Pain?

Sciatica is commonly the result of the compression or pinching of the sciatic nerve. This may be caused by:

Traumatic Injury

Traumatic injury, such as a car, truck or motorcycle accident, a workplace mishap, or a slip and fall.

Posture or Weight

Poor posture or excessive weight that impinges can on the nerve and cause sciatica.

Repetitive Stress or Motion

Repeated activity can press on nerves, resulting n sciatica other painful conditions.

Wear and Tear

Wear and tear from constant exercise as well as frequent impact in a sporting event can cause sciatica.

Overexertion

Overexertion, including lifting, bending, running, walking, standing or squatting can press on nerves.

Other painful conditions

Spinal stenosis, bone spurs, tumors or herniated discs can lead to sciatica.

How Do We Treat Sciatica?

When you come to us seeking relief for any type of pain, including sciatica, we’ll start by conducting a thorough medical exam and compiling a complete medical history, so we can make the most accurate diagnosis. We may prescribe painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs to temporarily bring relief from pain, and we’ll customarily recommend physical therapy and/or chiropractic care to alleviate symptoms. We can also treat you through facet joint injections, where we use steroids are used to reduce inflammation.

If you need further treatment to effectively manage your pain, we offer:

(View the  following short videos and descriptions.)

Trigger Point Injections

Use a thin needle to target knots or “trigger points” that are causing your pain

What are trigger point injections?

This outpatient procedure is designed to reduce or relieve the pain of trigger points. These small, tender knots can form in muscles or in the fascia (the soft, stretchy connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs). The trigger point injection procedure takes only a few minutes to complete.

Steroid injections

The injection of anti-inflammatory medication around your spinal nerves

What are lumbar epidural steroid injections?

This injection procedure is performed to relieve low back and radiating leg pain. Steroid medication can reduce the swelling and inflammation caused by spinal conditions.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Platelets from your own blood are used to promote tissue regeneration and healings

What is platelet rich plasma therapy?

Platelet rich plasma therapy can help injured joints and other problems. It uses parts of your own blood to reduce pain and speed up healing.

Radiofrequency treatment

A minimally invasive procedure that destroys or shrinks damaged tissue with radio waves

What is radiofrequency neurotomy of the lumbar facets?

This procedure uses heat from radio waves to treat painful facet joints in your lower back. It eases pain that isn’t helped by medications or physical therapy.

Spinal Cord Stimulation

The use of electrical impulses to block pain signals to your brain

What is spinal cord stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation (also called SCS) uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the back, arms and legs. It is believed that electrical pulses prevent pain signals from being received by the brain. SCS candidates include people who suffer from neuropathic pain and for whom conservative treatments have failed.
