What Is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis involves a narrowing or constricting of your spinal canal, which encases your spinal cord and nerves. The narrowing can put undue pressure on nerve roots or your entire spinal cord, leading to pain, weakness or numbness/tingling in your upper or lower extremities.

What Are the Common Causes of Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis may develop as a consequence of a number of factors, including:

Traumatic Injury

Whether in a motor vehicle accident, athletic competition, a workplace injury or a slip and fall can lead to spinal stenosis.

Back Surgery

Inflammation or swelling may occur after back surgery.

Aging

Age-related conditions can occur such as thickening of your ligaments or the loss of cartilage and development of bone spurs.

Congenital Issues

Congenital issues, such as scoliosis (a curved spine) or a narrow spinal canal can result in spinal stenosis.

Disease

Disease, including rheumatoid arthritis and Paget’s disease can cause your bones to grow larger and impinge on your spinal canal.

What Spinal Stenosis Conditions Do We Treat ?

At Pain Management Specialists of New York, we treat spinal stenosis that develops anywhere along your spinal cord, including:

Pain-in-shoulder-blades-upper-or-middle-back

Pain-radiating-to-other-body-parts,-such-as-feet,-legs-and-arms

Cervical Stenosis

Sciatica

Foraminal Stenosis

How Can We Help Minimize the Pain ?

At Pain Management Specialists of New York, we take a comprehensive approach to the pain caused by spinal stenosis. We’ll gather and review a complete medical history and perform a thorough physical examination, so the we can have a clear sense of the causes and indications of your condition. We may initially prescribe painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications for short-term relief from pain. We also commonly recommend physical therapy to help alleviate the challenges brought about by spinal stenosis.

If spinal stenosis still leaves you with unmanageable pain, we can perform facet joint injections, where steroids are used to reduce inflammation. We also offer a range of interventional procedures, including::

(View the  following short videos and descriptions.)

Steroid Injections in neck

The injection of anti-inflammatory medication around damaged tissue or nerves

What are epidural steroid injections of the cervical spine?

This injection treats the pain of an inflamed nerve in your cervical spine. It relieves nerve swelling. If you have a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or some other problem that’s pressing on a nerve, it may help you.

Steroid Injections in upper back

The injection of anti-inflammatory medication around damaged tissue or nerves in upper back

What are thoracic epidural steroid injections?

This outpatient procedure is an injection performed to relieve pain in the upper back.

Steroid Injections in lower back

The injection of anti-inflammatory medication around damaged tissue or nerves in the lower back

What are lumbar epidural steroid injections?

This injection procedure is performed to relieve low back and radiating leg pain. Steroid medication can reduce the swelling and inflammation caused by spinal conditions.

Platelet Rich Plasma Injections

We use platelets from your own blood to promote tissue regeneration and healing.

What are platelet rich plasma injections?

Platelet rich plasma therapy can help injured joints and other problems. It uses parts of your own blood to reduce pain and speed up healing.

Radiofrequency Ablation

A minimally invasive procedure that destroys or shrinks damaged tissue with radio waves

What is radiofrequency ablation of the lumbar facets?

This procedure uses heat from radio waves to treat painful facet joints in your lower back. It eases pain that isn’t helped by medications or physical therapy.

Spinal cord stimulation

Uses electrical impulses to block pain signals to your brain

What is spinal cord stimulation (trial procedure)?

Spinal cord stimulation (also called SCS) uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the back, arms and legs. It is believed that electrical pulses prevent pain signals from being received by the brain. SCS candidates include people who suffer from neuropathic pain and for whom conservative treatments have failed.

What is a spinal cord stimulator implant?

Spinal cord stimulation (also called SCS) uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the back, arms and legs. It is believed that electrical pulses prevent pain signals from being received by the brain. SCS candidates include people who suffer from neuropathic pain and for whom conservative treatments have failed.

If these approaches fail to provide the relief you need, we can refer you to a surgeon, who may offer other options to alleviate your pain.
