What Is Mid-Back Pain?

The middle of your back is medically referred to as the thoracic part of your spine, located between the base of your neck and your rib cage. You have 12 vertebrae in the thoracic region, as well as ligaments, muscles and tendons, all of which are susceptible to injury.

What Are the Common Causes of Mid-Back Pain?

The mid-back supports many daily movements and is vulnerable to injury and pain from a variety of common causes, including::

Accidental injury

Accidental injury, from motor vehicle collisions to workplace injuries, or slips, trips and falls.

Posture or Weight

Excessive weight or poor posture, which can pinch nerves or damage connective tissue

Aging

Age-related conditions, including deterioration of spinal discs

Congenital issues

Congenital issues, such as scoliosis (a curved spine) or a narrow spinal canal (spinal stenosis)

Sports

Sports-related injuries or wear and tear affecting the mid-back

Overexertion

Overexertion, including lifting, pulling, pushing, bending or squatting

Epidural Steroid Injections

What are thoracic epidural injections?

This minimally invasive procedure is performed to relieve mid-back pain and radiating chest discomfort caused by conditions such as thoracic disc herniation, spinal stenosis, or nerve inflammation. A corticosteroid is injected into the epidural space of the thoracic spine to reduce inflammation and pressure on the affected nerves. While this video illustrates the lumbar technique, the thoracic epidural steroid injection follows a similar approach and is equally effective for treating pain originating from the mid-back region.

Nerve Block

What is a thoracic medial branch block?

This procedure is used to diagnose and treat pain originating from the facet joints in the thoracic (mid-back) spine. A small amount of anesthetic is injected near the medial branch nerves, which transmit pain signals from the thoracic facet joints. If pain relief follows, it confirms these joints as the likely source of discomfort. While this video shows the lumbar approach, the thoracic medial branch block follows the same principles and technique, adapted to the mid-back region.

Radio Frequency Neurotomy

What is a thoracic radio frequency neurotomy?

Radiofrequency neurotomy is a targeted procedure that provides longer-lasting relief from chronic mid-back (thoracic) pain caused by facet joint irritation. Using radiofrequency energy, the medial branch nerves that carry pain signals are carefully disrupted. This is typically done after a successful thoracic medial branch block. Though this video illustrates the lumbar version of the procedure, the thoracic radiofrequency neurotomy uses a similar technique, customized to the thoracic spine.

Trigger Point Injections

What are trigger point injections?

This outpatient procedure is designed to reduce or relieve the pain of trigger points. These small, tender knots can form in muscles or in the fascia (the soft, stretchy connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs). The trigger point injection procedure takes only a few minutes to complete.

Spinal Cord Stimulation

Uses electrical impulses to block pain signals to your brain

What is spinal cord stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation (also called SCS) uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the back, arms and legs. It is believed that electrical pulses prevent pain signals from being received by the brain. SCS candidates include people who suffer from neuropathic pain and for whom conservative treatments have failed.

Disc Decompression / Discectomy

Herniated disc treatment

What is disc decompression or discectomy?

This is a procedure to treat a herniated disc. That’s a bulging disc in your spine. Getting rid of the bulge can relieve pressure on your nerves. It can relieve pain in your lower back and your legs.
If these approaches fail to provide the relief you seek, we can refer you to a surgeon, who can help you explore other options to alleviate your pain.
